Why are we here, on this planet?

“The religious response might be that we are here to do whatever God wants us to do.”
The Christian response is that we have a longing inside of us, placed there by God, to seek and know our Creator even if we’re not sure He even exists or not.

“We have no purpose at all.” “There is no purpose to our existence at all. None.”
This is the only possible conclusion if you reject your Creator.

“If that bothers you, then believe whatever makes you happy and lets you feel complete.” “The answer I believe is that we have to assign our own purpose to ourselves.”
This advice is inviting you to deceive yourself into believing you have purpose. It calls upon our human ability for self delusion. The only possibility of a purpose is if we have a Creator.

This is probably the hardest question anyone can try to answer.

The religious response might be that we are here to do whatever God wants us to do, which entails everything from appreciating His creations to helping out people in need. All the religions are slightly different on the details, but they agree on the basics of getting along and being thankful for what you have.

Being non-religious myself, I find the answer harder to find. If a god did not create us, then are we just accidents with no purpose other than to live and propagate? I can't believe that is true. The answer I believe is that we have to assign our own purpose to ourselves.

My own self-designated purpose is to explore. It's a big universe we live in, with lots of fantastic things. I want to see as much as I can while I'm here. I also want to share it with others, help them see the interesting stuff around them.

Beyond that, I think we each have a duty to protect life and help people out. If we didn't do this, the world would steadily get worse. Species would die out from climate change and habitat destruction. People would get meaner and continue to fight wars. So I'm doing all I can do to make the world better for future generations, small as my input is.

Not sure if this is the answer you're looking for. Like I said, it's really tough to handle that question, but it's one we all have to answer sooner or later. And I think everybody is going to answer it in a different way.

We have no purpose at all. The reason why we're here today is because around 3.5 billion years ago on earth the condition was right for life to begin (temp, chemical, gas, etc) and over time we evolve into what we are today

There is no purpose to our existence at all. None.

If that bothers you, then believe whatever makes you happy and lets you feel complete. Earth/Galaxy/Reality doesn't care whichever way you go.

Reminds me of global warming freaks (oh, it IS happening, don't misunderstand me, and it looks likely to HAMMER our way of living in a massive way) who babble on about 'we have to save the Earth, we must husband it for our children' and act as if I, for instance, am a beast for sneering at them. Supposedly I am evil for that. But I ask: just which of us is filled with hubris and a stunning inability to see the world as a whole and which of us actually knows his place in the world and comes closer to seeing it as a whole? They want to save the Earth... FOR THEMSELVES. They don't care in the least what the Earth wants or what would have happened if they didn't force it to their own ends and concerns. They want it to remain exactly like it is now or a wee bit "better" in a few ways that would make them feel better. I know and accept the world simply doesn't care. Earth doesn't care if there is life on it, what that life is like, how it ends/begins/lasts/ends/begins/etc., or if it ever does. Earth couldn't care less if a massive asteroid whacks us and makes the surface molten for a hundred million years. Earth doesn't care if we break it up along with the other planets and bring in material from elsewhere and build a Dyson sphere. It just doesn't care about those things or global warming either. I do. I darn well hope life goes on more of less as nicely as it has for me until I die. But I do not mistake that desire for somehow mirroring a desire that existence itself has.

It is, however, surprisingly easy to have a code of ethics and a sensitivity for others and other things, whether animate or inanimate, and a desire to see to their well-being according to the best of my understanding of them. I need no fear of penalties to generate these thoughts and actions. I wish you good luck in coming to realize the same thing. Existence's having no purpose need not mean you yourself must have no purpose or that you must become nihilistic.
