What is a little yellow shield with an exclamation mark on it, that keeps telling me "updates are ready for your computer Click here to install these updates?

That sounds like you have Microsoft Updates set for notification (that there are some ready) but not for auto-installation. If it were a red shield, it would mean you don't even have notification selected.

If you're diligent and good with computers, I suggest you go to http://updates.microsoft.com and decide which of the updates you want to install. There are two levels: Critical and optional. It's probably a good idea to install all the critical ones -- most are security updates.

On the other hand, if you're not good with computers, I suggest you turn on automatic updating and let Microsoft do the work for you.

1. Right-Click My Computer and select properties.
2. Select the Automatic Updates tab.
3. Choose one of the first two options, Automatic Updates or Automatic Download only.
4. Click OK.

The big difference between the two methods is that if Microsoft makes all the decisions, they're liable to make an occasional boo-boo (they made two last month). I like to at least know when a boo-boo might happen and, even more important, what I just did that might have made a boo-boo happen, so I do mine by hand. I also don't run to install them as soon as they come out (usually, the second Tuesday of each month), but wait a few days to see if they're safe.

They've also started to slip in things that are critical to them, but not to us. There was a fuss last year about them deciding an anti-piracy update was "critical" and installing it automatically. It disabled some legitimate machines, and the owners had no clue as to what had happened.

Its just an icon that tells you there are updates available to be installed. In general microsoft release updates on the second tuesday of each month.

You must have the windows update settings set to notify of updates. If you right click my computer and choose properties you can if you want set it to automatically install updates.

it is the automatic updates telling you there are updates available.. You will need to go into your setting and click download and install updates instead of download updates and wait till I install them
