Best way to avoid "black spot" on roses?

There are some good multi-purpose rose preparations on the market. Most will control black spot and mildew, and give aphid control. Repeat treatment is necessary, as there is no permanent `cure`. Mildew is encouraged by erratic watering, poor air circulation, and poor propagation. Mulch plants to keep roots cool and to retain water. Although many plants have a tendency to mildew, good soil, occasional fertiliser feeds and mulching will help greatly.

Plant plastic flowers.

Honestly, there is no way to prevent mildew and black spot, other than by planting in open areas and paying attention to how and when you water. You can do all you want, and it will still come.

I use Orthonex religiously to fight black spot and aphids. It works very well.

Plant in full sun where there is air circulation. Keep the plant away from a fence. Never water at night. Discard any diseased material far away from your beds.

Water them only at their roots. Avoid getting water on the leaves. There are also fungacides you can spray on the leaves.
