I had a 17" CRT and switched to a 19" samsung widescreen. What a difference there is so much space and it is easier on the eyes. At first it is hard to adjust having so much space especially when typing word documents or doing some graphic editing. In my opinion get a widescreen many times they are cheaper than standard monitors.

It depends.
For a single image your eye / mind will prefer widescreen. But for many apps they are more orientated to full frame, so the widescreen buys you less. For example, in Excel, the cells are a wide aspect ratio, so you will see more cells on a widescreen. Word however is orientated for a portrait piece of letter or A4 paper, so you see less of the paper and more of the gray bars down the sides. (Even if you view two pages, this has an aspect ration that fits full frame better than wide)
In terms of real estate widescreen buys you less.
a 19" full frame 1280 by 1024 is 14.84" wide 11.87" high giving
1,310,720 pixels and 176 sq in.
A 19" wide 1440 by 900 is 16.11" wide 10.07" high giving
1,296,000 pixels and 162.2 sq in.
So, if you want to cram the most information possible on your screen, wide is less. (Slightly)
Personally I prefer widescreen.

I bought a 20inch dell widescreen and I love it to my death. If you're willing to spend 700ish then wait a bit. Dell 24 inch wide screen is about to come out. It will have High def support and 1900x1080 resolution. I wish i didn't get this one so that i could get the 24 inch. Also if you wait a month or so and check in every day there is usually a sale every now and then. I get my dell 2 years ago for 450, and the original price is 800

I just switched from a 4:3 screen to a wide screen and I have to say that I love it. The extra real estate is awesome!
Just remember that if your games do not natively support the wide screen resolutions, it will squash the picture to fit. It will look a little weird at first but you get used to it.

Go with widescreen, your movies will look better without those two black bands above and below the picture.
