I don't want to put a poison down, just want to pick up the sod and put mulch with some food for the dogwood. The ground is hard in the front yard.

If the ground is smooth and there are no visible tree roots you can rent a sod cutter. It's about $50.00 for a day's rental. Half day would be less.

The easy method is go get heavy cardboard. Put it down on top of the sod, cutting it to be the circle you want. Pile 5 inches of mulch, bark or chips, and you're done. The grass will not grow back thru for a couple of years. When the grass starts growing and you can't keep up with weeding, just do the same thing again. More cardboard and mulch, right on top of the first layer.

Good luck! This really does work. I've been doing it for years.

Go ahead and mow it down short under it and apply the mulch. If you remove the soil, you may damage the roots and do more harm to the tree then good. When grass or weeds show through the mulch, just spray them with some vinegar when it is hot out!.

just get rid of the extra sod with a regular shovel but you don't have to if you'll be putting mulch around it.
