My gf's apartment is poorly insulated, so this past winter it was freezing inside. Now it's not even close to how hot it's going to be this summer and her apartemtn is already blazing. We're in the process of sticking up on fans for every room, but how can we keep the heat out? Would big, heavy drapes work so heat doesn't come in through the window?

I would depend on how much freedom you have. Heavy drapes would be one good way, but they would only insulate the windows. If the walls are a problem, they would need to be insulated as well. There are wall coverings that can do the job, but since it's a rented apartment, they might not let you do that.

Yes, heavy drapes will help. Keep the sun out wherever possible. If you can put up shades on the outside of windows, that will be even better!

Keep TVs and computers off when not in use.

Drapes definitely will help keep out the sun (and the heat that it brings with it). Light colored drapes with a backing would work best to reflect the light (and heat) instead of absorbing it.

if possible close off all rooms that you dont use with doors, sheets or curtains and dont go in them. i used a sheet in my house trailer to block off the front room from the hallway and it worked great. foam backed curtains do work good too. just live in the front room with an air conditioner. try to use duct tape to close off any cracks in doors or windows. dont use the oven at all, get a grill or use the microwave. i think the apartment will get hottest from 10am till 6pm so leave if possible and sit outside in the shade.
