"[A] less confrontational method of containing Communist power through diplomatic accords and a flexible system of rewards and punishments by which Washington might moderate Soviet behaviour." ... "Pulling the Soviets into a network of agreements, and thus giving them a stake in the status quo, would create a stable structure of peace. Finally, expanding economic and cultural ties might even serve to open up Soviet society."

Dentente was a policy of mutual relaxation of hostilities.

Democratic Henry M. 'Scoop' Jackson was a fierce opponent of 'detente' since he maintained, correctly as it turned out, that you could not trust the Soviet Union to hold up its end of the bargain or honor any treaties.

Senator Jackson was correct that after aggreeing to 'detente' the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, boycotted the Olympics, and financially funded terrorists all over the world.

if you promise to not blow us up, we promise to not blow you up. or....don't use yours, or we will use ours. nukes are so very scary that nobody wanted to push the first button. so...each side had such large sticks to use, that they could not use said stick, since to use such a terrible weapon would also affect their own populations with retaliation and drifting radioactive dust. detente is simply a political term for stalemate
