My 2006 Chevy Malibu just got new brakes yesterday. When I press the brakes at maybe 20 or more mph, they make a grinding noise. Is that a common sound for new brakes? The person I had install the brakes said that it goes away within a couple of days. Also, if I go beyond 20 or more mph, it doesn't stop immediately. The car slows down, with the grinding noise, but with a lot of pressure from me.
PLEASE SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY!!!!

In response to the first reply, the car was a demo for a year and a half before I even got the car.

Don't know if this your problem but,I worked as a diesel mechanic in a steel industry,we worked on mostly big diesel equipment but sometimes we would have to work on some of the gas trucks that the company use,a fellow mechanic one time did a brake job on a ford pickup truck, the truck return the next day with the same noise you just discribed, when they check it out they found out the disc brake pads were put in backwards,in other words,it was the metal side facing the rotor and though it stop the truck,it did not brake immediately.needless to say the mechanic that screw up was given a warning and days off

That grow to be particularly dumb. Pads fee about $20 and take decrease than an hour for all people. It does no longer take a mechanic. yet now you've heated it up and are risking burning the grease out of the bearing, buring the caliper seals, and so on. you've in simple terms run on the hand brake off the rears in an emergency. yet you should under no circumstances have it with metallic on metallic with the front brakes. and do not keep utilizing it. The bearing might want to be very severe priced and unsafe. Now you should a minimum of gadget or replace the rotor. you've higher the fee through an element of three a minimum of. in case you keep utilizing it, it is going to expenditures you masses more advantageous, in case you dissipate the caliper and bearing. even once you should watch for the disk artwork yet have tochronic it now, then nevertheless replace the pads. they gained't very last, yet a minimum of they are going to end the bearing and caliper from being burned up. how you would possibly want to do straight forward such issues as pads. all people can do it. you in simple terms slowly stress the piston to retract, through squeezing the pads back, ideally with a channel lock pliers. then you truly get rid of the pad retainer, slip them out, slide new ones in, replace the retainer, and pump the brakes to push the pads back into contact.

I have a 2005 Nissan Maxima & I have the same problem. The mechanic told me when they are new they have to broken in. I DO NOT believe that mine make a slight squickiey noise but I will tell NO lie it irratates me to no end. A friend of mine blew them over with air stating that when new brakes are put on from the tires being open they are exposed to air quickly & contain alot of DUST. So who knows the truth he took my car & now it makes NO NOISE at all I believe the mechanics want us to coninue to return WE are guarenteed MONEY

No, something is definitely wrong! Shouldn't even need new brakes on a 2006 unless you have lots of mileage or rest your foot on brake pedal while driving.

Most of the time, it's usually because of an inexpensive quality of brake pads (or shoes) installed.
