1. See a patent agent a.s.a.p., to register the invention and make proper legal claim to ownership. Check the Phone Book.
2. Contact your nearest Regional Development Agency to get advice about funds available to get you started. It's not begging, they're there to help finance people like you and can advise on prospects for your marketing, its style and plan - how/when/where. Your local Councillor should know where the RDA is..
3. Contact an advertising agency, a website designer and your bank as soon as you've made the decision to proceed. Choose an ad agency in membership of the IPA.
4. Not all new businesses succeed! You'll have to have learn and develop business drive and acumen, have a bit of luck too, but mostly you'll need the capacity to work hard and long, to stick at it and to have the active support of your missus or mum or partner or husband.
5. If you can be customer-benefit conscious rather then self-profit conscious you'll be the happier.
6. Good luck!

PS Patent Agent cost is peanuts compared to the value of the protection organised for you.

If it is an invention, then you should consider patenting it which is a form of protection in its own right. You can also check with the Patent Office whether your invention breaches someone else's patent.

You are looking for Venture Capital and I have given you a link to a list of such companies. Try also Business Angels aka Angel Investors.

First port of call should be your bank but wherever you go, you MUST have a solid business plan to present. So, put together a team, which will include an accountant and a lawyer, and always seek advice before taking any actions, it could pay you in the long run.

Good Luck.

File a patent: http://www.uspto.gov/web/patents/howtopat.htm or work with a patent lawyer to help you file a patent. Patent lawyers can't steal your idea, they'd lose serious money and be disbarred and sued. Other than that I'd say find a business partner to help you actually make the money. I'm available, and have an engineering and project management background ;)
