I just bought my first house and I live in West Michigan. The grass is VERY patchy, especially toward the street and I have a couple of oak trees in the yard. The neighbors on either side of me have beautiful lawns and I would like mine to look the same. Help!

I'd put seed down & water it morning & evening. I'd use weed & feed on existing grass. I'd plant a ground cover around the oak trees, or put in a barrier and surround the trees with mulch. Don't cut more than 1/3 off when you mow it. Try to keep kids and pets off for 2 months to let the new seeds get established.

Fill water balloons with mixture of roundup, dish detergent and water. At night throw the balloons in the yards and that will kill their yards in odd splotchy ways.

Get a sample of the yard soil and have it tested (local cooperative extension service can help) This september (Michigan) use the test results to add mulch or lime and rototill them into the soil 4 inches or more would be best. Seed heavily and cover with clean straw keep moist. Next spring your yard will look great and theirs will be coming back so they can be envious.

Chances are that any improvement will be welcomed by the neighbors.

i would say... talk to your neighbors... get to know them and ask what tips they have for your yard to look as great as theirs!

oak trees don't harm the lawn.... we have a bunch... maybe you need to just seed your yard and water to get it growing better... even the lawn/garden centers can help you pick out the right seeds ..

There are so many variable issues to consider, such as the varieties of grass used, herbicides, fertilizers and types of soil. Why not just ask your neighbors how they do it?
