In my opinion the meaning of life is to live it to its fullest and leave something of you behind. It's those who people remember who truly never die. You don't need to be famous to leave your mark on the rest of the world after you're gone. It of course helps, but it's not a big plus.
I'm a writer. I wrote short stories that were published and a novel that was published in 2004. I've attended book signings and left my mark on their pages. Through my work I will live on long after I'm gone. Do you have to do something like this? No! Simply be a person whom others have looked up to. Kids are the people you want to leave an impression on. They grow up remembering what you've done for them.
That's my take on it. When you think about it, what else is there?

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Actually, "42" is the ultimate answer to Life, the Universe and Everything. We just don't know what the question was.
Here's the meaning of life:
Have a great time.
That's about it. Then when you are feeding worms, they will get a "happy meal."
Cheers.

Ah, the most asked philosphical question of the ages. I wish I knew. I'm 56 and still trying to figure it out.
For fun, rent the last movie by Monty Python: The Meaning of Life. It has the tagline: It took God six days to create the Earth, and Monty Python just 1 hour and 48 minutes to screw it up.

Heeheeheehee.
Six thousand years (minimum) of intense meditation, debate, and inquiry into the answer to this question by the greatest minds of all time, with no consistant or universally-accepted results - yet you think someone on Yahoo is going to come up with a good answer for this one?
Keep dreaming.
