It was the speed a larger, "long play" or LP album played on a turntable style of vinyl record player. Older players had speeds of 45 rpm for singles and 78 rpm for the really *old* vinyl records from the 1920s and 1930s, back when phonographs all played at that speed.
^_^ I know this because when I was a kid I had this habit of sneaking the big, 33 1/3 albums out and playing them on a record player at 78, just to hear all this dull, boring "grown up" music sound so cute and chirpy. I had fun, even if everyone else was annoyed.
(of course this leads to skipping and to vinyl getting scratched, but hey....)
And I'm 40 now....and yes, I'm still into almost anything with some serious *beats per minute*, of a techno or metal sort, why do you ask? ^_^

It is the speed of the turntable in revolutions per minute that most LPs needed to recreate the sound recorded in the studio.
I'm 50.

It is one of the speeds at which a vinyl record can be played on a turntable. Also once referred to as "an album."
