I've seen a wide variety of shields with different colors, words, and designs.........do they have any meaning?

They probably represent the various tribes and clans.

I believe each individual viking painted his own symbol/painting on his own shield to represent something about himself. So you won't find too many that are the same.

I don't know about the shields, but I am from "Viking land" (Denmark) and I know they often decorated their things with runes (their written symbols) to symbol something to do with Valhalla (where the gods live) to symbol their strengths

the designs indicate the abilities of the bearer. Usually the markings indicate places, deeds, kinsmen, fortunes, and loyality to the ruling family.
