I mean, something a lot the lines of 300 or Gladiator, but in book form? I don't want a graphic novel (I've read 300.).

Are there any good fiction novels about any ancient wars?

Ender's Game, It's the same idea but in the future... by Orson Scott Card, it really is good.

Aztec by Gary Jennings, River God by Wilbur Smith...
pretty much anything by Sheaksphere, Arabian Nights, The Once and Future King by T.S. Elliot, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by Tolkein. If you're into Sci-Fi at all: Starship Troopers by Heinlein, Old Man's War by Scalzi, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, Dune by Frank Herbert.

David Gemmel: Legend.

A famous but aging warrior faces what he knows will be his final challenge.
A lone fighter and a heroic last stand... About as good a match to your request as I can conceive, though it is fantasy not history.

(Druss the legend and various other characters populate a whole interlinked set of worlds and novels: if you like Gemmel he has written lots more, in different settings, but Legend is almost the best.)
