I believe that Harley Riders get more respect because people have been brainwashed into thinking that Harleys are the coolest machines on the road. I disagree. At the start of his career Evel Knievel used a Triumph. Although he went on to use Harley Davidsons he said that the Triumph was the best machine for jumping. Of course, Harley Davidson have had the most publicity of all motorcycle manufacturers, it being the bike of choice for the Hell's Angels and other famous biker gangs, as well as featuring in more than its fair share of movies. Maybe I'm biased because I'm British, but my Bike of Choice would be a Triumph Rocket 3 Cruiser. However, as they are several grand more than I can afford I'll just stick with the ride I have, content that its little 125cc engine means that I can do 100 miles on £8.50s worth of petrol. After all it's performance that matters more than the name of the manufacturer. Another thing, if your big cool machine breaks down or (like me yesterday) suffers a puncture how far can you push it (if you can move it at all)?
When Lois Pryce rode from Alaska to the Southern-most tip of Argentina she did it on a Yamaha dirt bike. When she was riding through southern California people laughed and called it a "farm bike", but it saw her through to the end.
I think the point I'm trying to get accross here is 1) Harleys are over-rated and 2) It doesn't matter what your bike looks like so long as it works and you can ride it.

I haven't much respect for Harley's they aren't designed for cornering and only good for blasting along in a strait line.try a veteran bike like B S A Road Rocket or Triumph Tiger 110. .

i cant say that its a cage respect issue....
ive seen cars in my area "disrespect" motorcyclist equally. they either just fail to see/hear the motorcycle, or they see it and just dont want to give the right of way.
i live near a tourist town and i tell you, the tourists are the worst, they dont pay attention to thier driving at all, the worst accident ive see is a mini van rearending the back of a harley because they wernt watching the road.
also, i have to add this, mopeds.. there is moped rental in this tourist town, and the mopeds are frowned apon by everybody because the riders are the same tourists that cant drive. i could go on and on here.... ugg..

If you like the Harleys, good for you. I prefer Honda. The Honda is less expensive and I don't want or need to impress anyone. I prefer having a reliable bike that fires up each time I want to ride. Keep on riding.......

I usually give respect to heavy machinery, such as JCB's John Dear's or Harley's this is because they hurt when they pull out at 15mph

I wonder how the harley people i saw chewed up from their wreck this past weekend( they blew a front tire on the freeway was the word) feel about my leathers now? Their cool harley shirt, vest didn't help them much

I certainly don't think they get more respect on the road because of WHAT they ride, moreso HOW they ride it. I've yet, in my 20 years of driving and 13 years on a bike, to see a Harley rider riding a wheelie at 5 pm in the HOV lane on one of the busiest interstates in the USA.
I have, however, seen sportbike retards doing just that.
It's all in HOW you ride that's the determining factor. If you're respectful of others and the laws of the land - you're MUCH more likely to please (but not necessarily be noticed by) the cage driving public.
