Yes, Eruption changed the way the guitar is played...for certain. The tapping technique was essentially perfected within this solo.

However, since there aren't many who actually appreciate guitar music WITHOUT lyrics....and simply appreciate the techniques and the masters of the instrument...guitar music without lyrics won't ever be as mainstream as other genres.

For example, within the guitar community, these artists are well known...but if you asked the majority of others...they'd have no clue who they are:

Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Eric Johnson
Yngwie Malmsteen
Chet Atkins

.....the list can go on forever.

Sure, some of them have played in mainstream bands....and got their rise to stardom...but the fact is, each have revolutionized the way we play the guitar.

Perfect example is Jimi Hendrix. There will never be another like him. Was he unique and revolutionary? Absolutely! Compared to the guitarists of today, can he still compare...probably...but the infatuation probably wore off.

In every generation, someone will find a way to revolutionize the way we look at and play the guitar. More power to them!

Personally, I hope someone does so. I think its great that the guitar can be so versatile, and that we can stand to learn a few things by exploiting our natural creativity and drive.

Eddie is no doubt an incredible guitarist. he paved the way for others to make their mark. I doubt he is past his prime, but I am also interested to see who else can make some magic on the guitar.

Great guitar solo, definitely changed the way people looked and listened to the electric guitar for the next 15 years. There will be future pioneers and innovators, it's just not being pushed in a major way. Trust me, it will happen, perhaps from a place no one will expect.

i think its because there really arent that many skilled guitar players in pop music today... remember when grunge was big? Everyone knew the guitar players and drummers and bass players too.

Eruption was great... Eddie is a great guitar player..yes, however, I think he's a little overrated. I'm frankly sick sick of hearing about him.

i think eventually a great guitarist will come along when people stop fixating on the singers. So many people cant even name more than the singer in bands. its really sad in my opinion,

Oh there's more to come. Just because you or I can't think of anything new doesn't mean Joe Blow over there isn't working on a masterpiece! ;-)
