Some people don't care at all. They just buy the pet and come on here and ask what to do for their animal. I have seen so many questions with "I can't afford the vet". Why did you get the pet in the first place if you can't afford it? You are right, most people just don't care and could care less. I can't understand how some people are so cruel while they think they're being good. Your question has many sides to it, and you'll get lots of different opinions on this one. My opinion is that people don't care about their pets, some even think that they're accessories! Every pet is a living thing, and you should treat it with respect. If you can't afford a vet, DO NOT get an animal. Especially dogs, cats and horses which can be VERY costly. Even rats need good homes. I think that people are plain irresponsible. The only thing that keeps my confidence up is that some people out there actually care and they're never going to give up. Please care for your pets, and don't ever let them down!
Hope this helped! =)

everyone can afford a vet. tell your friend who has the pet, that the humane society in whatever town you are in, will give the dog very good care at half the cost that in private vets. plus they have programs if you see you can afford the bills. sometimes people get pets without really knowing the responsibility that comes with taking care of them. they say, how cute, a puppy. well the puppy grows up to be a dog with food, and drink issues, and then all the sudden that cute puppy is too much for them to handle.

I've wondered this too, and I have two theories. One, the people who do this are ignorant, trashy people who think dogs belong tied to chains in the backyard and deserve the same to be done to them. They do not care that they neglect their pets.
The second theory is that some people look at the price tag of the animal and not the cost of care. For example, you can go to a shelter and adopt a cat for $25. So they think, ok, I have $25, I can afford a cat. They fail to consider bowls, food, litter, toys, and vet care. All they see is the cost of the actual animal, and they ignore the rest. Then they realize they don't have enough money to cover it, so the animal suffers.
I figure everyone who refuses vet care probably falls into one of the two theories. What do you think?
EDIT: Oh wait, I forgot category 3! Spoiled rotten brats who whine their parents into a pet that they SWEAR they'll pay for with their $5 a week allowance, stupid parents say yes but refuse to give kids more money for pet, so pet suffers because parents have no backbone and spoil their kids. This makes me MAD! Parents need to take more responsibility for what they let their kids do.

A lot of people out there are selfish, they see something they want and that is it. They think just because they are adopting a dog/cat from a shelter they are doing the animal a favor and for this they don't need to seek vet care if a problem arises.
Other people do not look into the future, they think that the dog/cat will not have anything wrong(the old, I had dogs for years and they never once saw a vet line). They preffer to let the animal suffer in pain instead of paying $, dog/cat is replacable they'll just go "save" another from a shelter.
People think because it is not a dog/cat it doesn't need vet care. I don't know how many questions I see for rodents, reptiles, and birds. Just because they are "cheap" pets doesn't mean they don't deserve care. Or they don't realize that even small animals can have emergencies that need to be treated. I spent over $1000 on a degu for an injury that lead to a leg amputation. Without the surgery he would have died. I have spent $ on tumor removals, sprained/broken legs, respiratory infections, etc, all on rodents.
Many people are just ignorant of the actual care involved in having animals.

Have any of you stopped to think that maybe some people do everything in their power to help an animal. I know someone that found a full-blooded Blue Heeler on the highway and he had a broken leg. They took him to the vet and got his leg put in a cast and had him wormed and vaccinated. After that the only reason they took him to the vet was for his yearly shots. Then he came down with Cancer. They could not afford the vet bill after they found out he had it and that the price was going to be like 350$ a night just for him to stay at the vet. They then had to put down their dog that had once been a cute little puppy found on the highway with a broken leg. All because they could not afford the vet bill. So not everyone can afford the vet bills but they do treat their pets better than themselves. My pets live better than I do all because I care more about them and their saftey than I do about my own...........SO MOST OF YOU THAT WANT TO PUT PEOPLE DOWN JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO TAKE THIER PET TO THE VET. YOU NEED A WAKE UP CALL. I know alot of people who would die or even kill for their animals.

I think that sometimes it is not a matter of not careing, but just a matter of people thinking to optimisticly. They see a cute puppy or kitten, can afford the cost, food, toys, etc. They assume that it will need maybe a couple shots, but they don't prepare for when something goes wrong or when complications arise. People have the attitude of 'well its healthy and cute now, things wont change'. When things change, then they end up in a mess. I think that most people care about their pets, but sometimes loving animals too much leads people to take on animals that they just simpily cant care for because they neglect to see things realisticly.

In response to one of the comments: All pets must go to the vet for the vaccines. It is irresponsible not to have your animals vaccinated. People like this are the people who should not own animals. All dogs and cats need vet care at least once every three years (for 3 year vaccines).

To be fair, consider that someone may want the comfort of an animal and think that they can afford it. Poor people deserve some comfort too. Should they have nothing at all? I agree however, that if one really knows they cannot afford maintaining a pet they should wait until they can afford it.

Most people don't care, that's the problem with so many abuse cases going on. I just recently got a dog from some friends, and I am now seeing that she clearly has never seen a vet!!! I am taking her this week to get all her shots, and flea/tick meds. People who can't take care of them, shouldn't have them. JUST LIKE CHILDREN!!

People are selfish and only care about what they want even if it's not in the best interest of the animal! Shoot, they have kids they can't afford to take to the Dr., why would they care if their animals went?
