Science deals with the material universe. It lacks the tools to prove or disprove the existence of God. On the other hand, the relation among force, mass, and acceleration isn't a moral issue. God's commands to us deal with our relationships to God and to each other. How the universe works is left to us to figure out.
Someone with a science background is more capable than most of discerning spiritual truth, for example from the Bible. He is less likely to be deceived by false teachers. He is more likely to see through arguments which don't make sense or aren't based on fact.
Scientists who are unwilling to consider that there might be something other than this physical universe, or that there might be a God with the right to specify right and wrong, demand obedience, and judge our eternal destiny, will take extreme measures to dream up alternatives and arguments and denials. They refuse to apply scientific disciplines and reasoning to this area as they do to matter and energy.
They definitely don't belong in the same category.

What "cathegory"?
Religion is a set of beliefs based on FAITH.
Science is a set of beliefs based on observation, deduction, and experimental reproducibility.
If someone shows a scientific "fact" to be in error, science embraces that and modifies its "fact set" accordingly.
Religion is dogmatic.

If science is based on direct experiment and observation, then maybe God cannot be subject to direct experiment or observation ?
