First, make sure you're right. Then go ahead. --David Crockett.
If you're ridin' at the head of the herd, take a look back every now and then and make sure it's still there. --Will Rogers
You can and should delegate authority, but not responsibility.
Never ask a subordinate to do something you wouldn't do yourself.
Back your people, even when they're wrong.
Praise in public, criticise in private.

You wouldn't know any of the people I think of as great leaders. Most of the public "leaders" get there by running to the front of the parade, a practice I find a bit distasteful.

A great leader is the one in whose absence the job can be done. The opposite is a stupid leader. An example is Nelson Mandela in whose absence from leadership President Thabo Mbeki has made absolutely sure that there s not regression in terms of the direction South Africa is taking... Hope this answers your question...

A great leader is able to delegate authority and find capable people to complete all sorts of jobs for him, to see the bigger picture and have a vision for the future and is able to get his/her followers to march into hell and be glad for the journey. Leaders are willing to take responsibility, they're willing to take charge, and leaders, real leaders, don't blame others, they take control of the situation and get the job done.

Roosevelt and Churchill were leaders. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers were sent to their deaths by these two and yet, there were very few complaints.

With the polarization of America today it's very difficult to find leaders, because half of America will hate them, no matter what is suggested.
