When I caulked my tub I used painters tape on either side of the gap to be caulked. Put the caulk on, smooth it out with a wet finger. When your happy with the way it looks pull off the tape and let it dry for 24 hours before taking a shower.

The tub will guide your line for the most part, just apply the right amount of pressure to the caulking gun to get the right amount. I usually use a damp kitchen sponge to run down my caulking line to smooth it and equalize out the depth of the line.

Use the top edge of a tea spoon, first wet the spoon apply the caulk and place the tip of the spoon in the crack and the angle of the spoon will ride between the two joining Walls.

When you open the caulk tube, cut it at angle so that you can use the angle to guide you as you caulk. If you do mess up, run your finger under water so that it is damp and run your finger across the spot that is messed up (before it dries).

first..use a latex caulk..like Phenoseal...caulk the joint with a small run ..then get a bucket of warm water and a good sponge..get the sponge about 1/2 wet..and run it over your caulk..it will even itself out..just work with it and it will look great

Some say use the back of a spoon to smooth out the caulk, but I use my finger to gently force the caulk in, then when dry, reapply and smooth with finger again. This will help seal the spot, too.

Tape the lines off first with painter's tape, put the caulk in and smooth it off with your finger, then remove the tape. It should look perfect if you do it right.
