I have a 5g tank with a small filter and water heater, and one solitary beta fish living within. No matter where I place the tank in my apartment it will get some sunlight and the green hair algae grows like crazy!! what can I do to control this? and what is the best way to clean the algae out?

Try covering the side facing the sun with a piece of tank background to help cut down on the sun. Also you will want to do generour water changes while cleaning the gravel once a week. This will cut down onthe nutrients in the water that are feeding the algae. Only let the tank light on for about 10 hours a day maximum and I would really suggest only having it on while you are home to look at the tank.

A few snails will also help the situation, but they won't keep up unless you get the nutrients out of the water.

To answer your question, the sunlight does not help your situation at all. But to give you a helpful solution, I would first check the temperature of the tank. It should be somewhere between 70-77 degrees. if it's hotter than that, cool it down.
I can also suggest a fish that eats algae and stays at the bottom so as not to interfere with your beta. The fish is called a "plecostomus" They eat algae better than any fish I've ever seen. Better than snails, or cory cats.

Good Luck to you!

here is ya a cheapier and easier way to doing it i have a 30 gallon tank and a 10 gallon tank the 10 has a beta in and da other has just regular goldfish..buy u a snail it will not hurt da beta or he will not harm him they eat algae all da time and if not if u can't find a snail get a plain algea eater well they r called dat and bottom eaters but u can find them in pet stores where they sell fish but believe me i never ever have to clean none of my tanks i have filters and snails but ike i say try dat u will be in pressed ...p,s it will take some time but not a lont time just don't ever clean ya tank out cuz if u do the snail or bottm feeder will die so let them do da work and u be thankful...and u never have to worry bout cleaning it out cuz it is hard i know...lol but try it

there are several things to do get some algae eaters or buy solution that retards the growth of algea. You can also clean the tank once a week and use a tank light that slows down the growth
