Only when they are dirty. I also change the batteries at least once a year.

every time i polish through the house i do the remote controls as well so at least 3 times a week so mine never get nasty looking

I never even realized that anybody cleans their remotes, unless they're really nasty. I mean, two-day pizza grease stains nasty.
The same goes for my keyboard. I turned it over the other day and shook it, and a ton of nasty horrors just came spilling out. Gotta get a new keyboard......

Once a month...I do the remotes and the computer keyboard with alcohol wipes. People in my house tend to eat whenever they are on the computer or watching t.v. Yuck....

once weekly I clean them off. I also keep them out of reach of little ones and don't use my remotes around messy foods

Not as often as I throw it against the wall. Poor thing it seems to always be in my hand when I lose it.
