Each member of the family was issued ration books, and it was the challenge of the homemaker to pool the stamps and plan the family's meals within the set limits. Sugar, butter, coffee, and beef-steak were especially scarce and valued items. Home canning and the "victory garden" were added to the homemaker's concerns. Ration stamps became a type of currency, and lost ration books a major headache.

Every family member got a seperate ration book and there were extra dairy and such for children.

A good restaurant Porterhouse steak dinner would be over $6.00.

Many folks used "farmers markets" and prices were high for such as fresh produce, apples. These were not "Black market" but legal.

The US government legislated prices during the war to prevent price gouging. So there generally was not a huge jump in price.
