Kids worked as breaker boys and nippers (door openers) in the PA coal mines, sold papers (newsies), young girls worked in the silk mills and other factories, kids picked crops during harvest time, etc.

Even in 1918 when labor laws were in effect, people sent their underage kids to work so they could put food on the table. Mgmt. turned a blind eye.

The labor activist Mary Harris, was a proponent of the breaker boys and that is where she picked up the name "Mother Jones."

Which website?

One question you need to ask, what part of the 1900s? In 1905 conditions were awful, whereas in 1995 children were not even allowed to work.
