Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was the Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition that sailed around the Earth (1519-1522). Magellan also named the Pacific Ocean (the name means that it is a calm, peaceful ocean).

Although he is given credit for it, it is ironic that he died in the Philippines and never actually made it although several members of his crew did. The Basque navigator Juan Sebastián de Elcano (del Cano) completed the trip and piloted the ship to the conclusion of its journey.

Of the 270 crew members who set out with Magellan to circumnavigate the globe, only 18[1][2] managed to return to Spain and thereby complete the circumnavigation. They were led by Spanish Juan Sebastián Elcano, who took over command of the expedition after Magellan's death.
