It depends on what realm you're talking about. The meaning changes depending on the context.

In general English usage, it means "an idea" or a "guess". HOWEVER, that is NOT what the word "theory" always means.

In science, a theory is NOT a guess. Scientists use the term "hypothesis" for that. In science, a theory is an organized model that explains observations. So the "theory of gravity" isn't a guess; it's a set of laws and equations that have proven themselves over time and time again. The same is true for studies such as "the theory of evolution", "atomic theory", and even non-scientific studies such as "music theory" (the formal way of identifying and classifying notes and chords, how to write them, etc.)

In mathematics, "theory" is sometimes used to describe a particular category of mathematics. A mathematician might study "number theory", or "game theory", or "set theory", etc. They're certainly not "guesses". This is not to be confused with the word "theorEM".

So to answer this question, I really don't know what they're expecting. Since you posted this in the mathematics section, I assume they want the definition of the word as it's used in math, and I don't see which one most accurately applies.

3. Mathematics. a body of principles, theorems, or the like, belonging to one subject: number theory.

4. the branch of a science or art that deals with its principles or methods, as distinguished from its practice: music theory.

5. a particular conception or view of something to be done or of the method of doing it; a system of rules or principles.
