Joe Torre, with six pennants and four world championships seems to be on the verge of losing his job? What's wrong with George? Is he out of his freakin' mind?

Yes Warren, I get it! I'm merely asking a question. Fans and management of all major league teams look at success differently. Some are satisfied with division titles, some pennants, but the Yankees define success with World Championships. That's the reason Torre finds himself in this situation.

No, he's obsessed with winning the World Series, as usual. I think Joe is safe, and will likely be allowed to retire when that time comes.
Cox gets no heat because he's good, he's colorful, and he's someplace where Divisional Titles are worth a lot more than in New York. It's not always the manager's fault that his team typically melts in the spotlight like Cox's teams do, or even if they glow, like Torre's teams do most of the time.
Some owners have higher expectations, and Steinbrenner is one of them. Actually, he's the only owner with any right to have high expectations, as no owner has had more WS winning teams than he has, among all the active owners.

Because Bobby Cox manages in Atlanta and Joe Torre manages in New York.
The New York media is ruthless and always competing with one another for outrageous oneupmanship. Also, the Yankees consistently have the highest payroll in the major leagues by a wide margin. The amount they have to pay in luxury tax money alone equals the payroll of a small market team. As a result, Yankee fans expect a championship every year whereas Braves fans' expectations aren't as high. Plus, many Braves fans have become used to the postseason disappointments after 15 straight seasons of division titles, whereas the Yankees have had to settle for the wild card twice (which makes them hungrier to do better the next year) since making the postseason every year since 1995. Add in the fact that George Steinbrenner is a very impatient, mercurial man, and you'll see the difference.

He always has been out of his mind when things didn't go his way. Are you just now getting that?? Torre is a great manager, and this year his pitching rotation, bad even when it is healthy, is crippled. They will get better, but they will not win their division or be the wild card this year. Cox has been around a long time and won something like 12 consecutive division titles in 12 years. That speaks to his brilliance as a manager even though he has only won one World Series.

Well, for one thing, ask the folks in KC, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Seattle, Texas, Washington/Montreal, Chicago's North side, Colorado etc... what they would give to win just ONE World Series anytime soon. What the braves did over their 14 year run was pretty amazing.
Second, if you lived in Atlanta you'd see that Bobby Cox and the Braves are routinely skewered by the fair-weather/no-nothing fans around here, particularly around playoff time, for winning just one World Series, .
Finally, Torre works for a maniac.

The New York Yankees are expected to win the World Series every year. If they dont, somebody's job will be in jeopardy. It's just his turn.
That is the mindset of George and Co.

You're making a comparison that can't be made. They are completely different teams. George jumps the gun too much and makes irrational decisions. Turner/Time Warner doesn't do that. Different owners, different concepts.
