I have had my betta about eight months now, and when I got him he had fin rot. I did not know too much about bettas when I then and the whole time I have had him he has been battling this. Some weeks he looks like he is going to get better and his tail growing back and then it seems like all of that disapeers and we are back where we started. He lives in a 2.5 gallon tank and has the whole time I've had him, I've tried Melofix, I've tried a little aquiruim salt. It all seems to work temporarily..... any help?

Melafix isn't going to get the job done for you, it's just not strong enough. You need to treat the fish with either Maracyn or Maracyn TC for 10 days. That will clear up the fin rot and get him on the road to recovery.

The trick to solving disease is to ensure that the fish is healthy enough so that it's immune system can do the job itself.

The medication is only there to give the fish a helping help to weaken the bacterial or parasites causing the disease, so the the fish's weak immune system have a chance of winning the battle.

The only way I know to keep a fish healthy and in tip top condition is to keep his environment pristine. That mean do more water change at 70% to 80% a time if you must. Just ensure that the pH and temperature are the same and there should be no problem with large water change. I usually dechlorinate and age a large barrel of water, so that I could do large water change without fear of stressing the fish as both the tank water and aged water should have the same temp and pH.

Good Luck, try the water change and maintain the Melafix treatment I know it'll work.

i just went through this with my betta that i have in a 2.5 gal tank as well, nothing worked alone i used melafix, salt, maracyn...
i know that the directions said that you arent supposed to mix anything together b/c you dont want to over medicate, but my betta's beautiful fins were rotting, so I used 2xs as much salt and 1.5 times tetracyclin for 5 days and the fin rot went away fast and now my betta is growing his fins back and they look great, and he's much more active and happy.

I'm currently going through this with two of my fish. Right now, I seem to be having luck with Maracyn 2. I'm using it 1.5 times stronger than what they suggest and treating for 10 days. My fish both have signs of regrowth. (so far my fish seem fine, but you need to use your own judgement when it comes to going against directions.) I have heard that Melofix can be bad for bettas because it damages their labrynth organ that lets them breath from the surface. I wouldn't use it any more if I were you. Make sure that you are keeping the water VERY clean so that it doesnt' come back once you get it treated. Good luck.

put some pennies in the tank...the copper will help fight fungus and fin rot. Treat the fish with meds, then remove and sterilize the tank and all items in it with dilute chlorox..rinse very well, refill and add dechlor, place the beta back in the tank...should do fine. Good luck

not do you need to treat the fish but his tank needs to be cleaned all the water changed plants and gravel cleaned a new filter the disease stays in the water if it is not cleaned so he isn't getting rid of it and will not get better clean all of it and treat him the clean everything once every two weeks until he is healed

I have a betta too, this happens because his bowl is dirty, try washing it well.
