To back up your argument, these are the government statistics: All revenue from the taxation of tobacco, ciggarettes and cigars amounts to 9 billion per annum, the cost to the NHS to treat all smoking related disorders is 1.5 billion per annum, Far outweighing this is the 3 billion pound the NHS pays out to treat all eating related disorders, you may conclude from this that a levvy on all junk food should be introduced.
These figures can be verified from the office of statistics, so no you`re not insane.
Just for our US readers a packet of 20 in the UK is about £5:00 Thats about $10 !! A packet of 20 in Spain is about 2:20e about £1:56 or $3:10

Of course you're right, but the sad fact is it's killing all of us. I've smoked for years and I've now been diagnosed with emphysema. There's a paradox somewhere, on the one hand they're telling us how bad smoking is, and banning us from smoking in all kinds of public places, but on the other hand, if we all quit smoking the country would probably grind to a halt. If smoking is banned altogether then the Government will have to replace the revenue somehow? I reckon they'll do something like legalise Cannabis and put a huge tax on that, because the great majority of people smoke weed now, so it could be a real alternative. I'm not saying it's right, but it's what I can see happening eventually.

You are basically correct. There are many, many things people do that are hazardous to their own and other peoples' health. Yet, for some reason, we have decided to single out tobacco as the greatest of all villains. Most people have no idea how much tax smokers pay. Without federal and state taxes the average pack of cigarettes in the U.S. would cost less than 50 cents. Yet in New Jersey, they are somewhere around six dollars a pack. I defy anyone to show me a product that is taxes that much. If you realize that the manufacturers make billions of dollars of profit selling them for under 50 cents a pack you can just imagine how much the state of NJ is making at 6 dollars!

That money would have to be made up somewhere. The health care costs are overblown, too. You have to off set the money spent on smokers' health care by the shorter life span they have that tends to favor Social Security and pension payments.

Your talking about the government, since when can they not find another way to tax us?

People moan about the cost to the NHS but I think we pretty much pay for it. The country wont collapse but if we all give up smoking tomorrow the government will panic and it will cost the non smokers a hell of a lot more!

You are right. A vast majority of government monies come from overtaxed smokers. Plus, outlawing smoking would put the thousands of tobacco farmers out of business. Alot of the "facts" about second hand smoke is merely propaganda. Plus, I think left wingers have forgotten about how badly prohibition did the first time around. Anyways look up the facts, and you'll see that alcohol contributes to alot more death and destruction than cigarettes could ever dream of. Yet no one is trying to outlaw and overtax alcohol. Those "Truth" guys are probably all college alcoholics.

Your name says insane but you are right to an extent - the government makes a lot of money from the tax on cigarettes and if we all stopped smoking they would have to put the tax something else

Wrong. the economy will hardly be affected by the stoppage of smoking, there are other ways of generating tax related funds. Our ancestors will benefit from less diseases, in relation to smoking.

so im sure the world will be much better off, both environmentally and for human health.

Dear Insane,
you are wrong. The country would not fall apart. The NHS would breathe a sigh of relief because the amount that smokers cost the NHS far outweighs what they pay in taxes. That 'we pay loads in taxes' tired old excuse is load of rubbish. In a life time of smoking you have paid about £10k in taxes. One operation to amputate your leg because the arteries have died from smoking cost the NHS about £35k. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it! ;-)
