play with him for a little while before he goes to bed; should tire him out.

Or else you'll have to try letting him out of the cage and disciplining him if he does chew. He'll have to get used to it sooner or later, and 6 months is a good training age.

Put him in his crate and ignore him. If he learns to hold out and whine until you give in, that's all he'll do. Give him a few days of this and he'll get used to it and know you aren't going to mess with him at night time.

Do NOT let him out while unsupervised because a 6 month old dog chews and is ingrained in his nature. A dog isn't mature enough to be unsupervised until he/she's about 2 years old (mentally) and has good obedience training in those 2 years.

When my dog was that age, she did the same thing. I broke her of it by putting her carrier in front of my recliner so she could see it and then put her in the carrier. I sat in the recliner. She started whineing to come out, but I didn't pay any attention to her until she quieted down for 5 min. or so. She knew I was there and had not abandoned her, but that I was not going to reward negative behavior. It took 30 min. or so, but it does work and it sticks after the first or second time doing it.

Play and walk him to tire him out right before bedtime. He must learn to remain in his crate. If he can "hold it" all night, ignore any whining. This will take a few days & is the hardest part for us pet owners. After that, he will be fine.

Don't let him sleep too much during the day and lots of exercise in the evening. He should be tired enough to sleep.

take him for long walk or run before going to bed.
make sure he has comfortable bed and if he likes to nestle ( burrow etc) give him big blanket and if he barks at you bark back let him know you are the dominant dog. I sounds funny but you need to be Alpha Dog.
Good luck.

get a little cheap wind-up alarm clock. its supposed to remind them of their mothers heartbeat, the ticking of the clock that is. try covering the cage/pen with a blanket, too. i remember those days, they were tough

ok...
play with him before putting him to bed

he will tire faster

and dont give in or he will never stop

in his cage/pin put a blanket with a heating pad under it -- it will remind them of there mother -- for my kittens i would use a stuffed animal on a heating pad

it works :)
