If the woodpeckers are boring into the trees on your property, you may not actually want to get rid of them. They're digging in the wood in search of boring insects, such as beetle larvae and wood wasps, that can cause considerable damage, or even kill trees.

So the woodpeckers may well be doing you a huge favour getting rid of those pests for you.

If they are drilling into the wood siding on your house, or something similar, then they can be more of a problem.

Scarecrow-like systems, like plastic owls and other deterrents might work for a little while, but if there is no reinforcement or consequences, then the birds quickly learn to ignore them. Even devices like bangers (the same sort of thing used to frighten bears) might work a few times, but if all it does is generate noise, they'll quickly learn to tolerate it.

You may have to try something like those methods (scarecrows, sonic repellers) combined with the occasional shot from a slingshot or other startling (but not injurious) control method. Then they might stay away.

I agree with haysoos2. Just discharging a common garden
pea gravel will settle your stress. The whack of stone impact
upon tree will both repell birds and make reader happier. Odds are you will usually miss the trunk but its passage into leaf is just as effective.

Get a fake owl and put it nearby the woodpeckers. It will scare them away.

One of my favorites -- though I have to confess I've never used it, so I don't really know if it works -- is this SPIDER gizmo.

That site also has many other possible solutions. Good luck!
