because the typical person doesn`t understand what "emo" means, & it`s just easier to make fun of or put down something that u don`t understand...i think it`s a shame that people are so narrow-minded that they have to stereotype people & perpetuate myths & untruths because a person is different, or chooses to live their life in a way that is not considered the accepted "norm"...i have been guilty of this myself in the past & i`m certainly not proud of it...it`s so ingrained in all of this to judge a book by its cover, to only look at outward appearances & not bother with what`s inside, that it`s 2nd nature to ridicule a person who has a different type of "beauty", be it a unique fashion sense, a great personality, or whatever...anyway, i have many "emo" friends, "punk" friends, "goth" friends, etc. because i circulate in this type of environment, & almost all of us are stereotyped, ridiculed, put down, etc because of the appearance we have, the music we listen to, etc....for me, i don`t care about it, i just laugh because i don`t really give a crap what others think or how they see me, but for younger people it can be difficult, as sometimes they haven`t developed a thick skin to handle these criticisms from ignorant people...

the same reason they discriminate over anything/anyone else.
usually ties to ignorance or fear of the unknown... it's something different, so making fun of something that differs is easier than trying to understand it.
