I know coal ash can't be used and wood ash can but I don't know about turf.

If you spread any wood ash thinly in your compost pile -- or even directly to less acid-loving plants -- you shouldn't have a problem.

If you have a very low acidity level in your soil, I wouldn't risk any ash.

Turf ash? First of all, I've never heard of it. Without really knowing what it is............I'd have to think long and hard about what chemicals have been used on the turf before it became ash. If there were soil sterilents, heavy duty herbicides, other toxins........no don't put it in the compost.

If the turf was "clean" then yes, a little won't hurt. Ideally you want "green" or fresh vegetation and "brown" or dry vegetation for your compost so the micro and macro-organisms have something to consume for food. Ash isn't high on the desired foods......if they even eat it at all.
