Depends on what your definition of the profit is. If you're just going for difference from gross to cost (Gross-Cost), I would guess the Titanic would be the choice because it grossed nearly 2 billion worldwide. Even being one of the most expensive films ever made, that gives it a profit of at least $1.5 billion.

I think the more accurate indicator though is percentage. Take the gross of a movie and divide it by the budget. If you go by this metric, I'm pretty sure The Blair Witch Project. If you go by the IMDB numbers of $60,000 for the budget and worldwide gross of $248 million that gives you a gross to cost ratio of 4144. If you do the same thing with Titanic you get a number of about 9.

A few other movies I found that had gross to cost in the triple digits or higher include Road to Ruin, Pink Flamingos, Brothers McMullen, Night of the LIving Dead, Damaged Lives, Halloween, Legend of Boggy Creek.

The first Star Wars cost only 13 million to make and then grossed over 750 million world wide. That's a profit of 737 million! I don't think that's been beaten yet.
Oh I'm wrong (I mean Star Wars is correct but)
Titanic cost 200 million to make. World wide it made $1,835,300,000. That's a profit of One Billion, 635 Million, 300 thousand! WOW! No wonder James Cameron took a break from Hollywood for ten years...lol

Don't get profit confused with Gross. Titanic was the highest GROSSING movie of all time...it was also the most expensive movie to make of all time: over 200,000,000. And that is just the budget! Add in promotion and it gets really pricey!

Depends on who you believe...Hollywood accounting is always shaky.

In recent years, the most profitable movies have been "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" (cost = $5 million; gross = $205 million) and "The Blair Witch Project" (cost = $125,000; gross = $133 million).
