Establish what (exactly) gets paid for out of the joint account. If all the necessities are covered (rent/mortgage, utilities, phone bill) than what he spends his own (or you spend your own) money on shouldn't be an issue.

Granted, men 'usually' aren't as good as 'bargain hunters', and 'typically' buy larger packages and more junk food... but if you pick at every purchase he makes, he'll soon leave all the shopping to you, and then complain that there is 'nothing good to eat'.

If he was careless with his 'own' money, as long as the joint expenses are covered, he's on his own for the insurance. If you are both covered by that insurance, then it comes out of the joint account -- but if it's HIS, than HE is responsible. Maybe he needs to take back the BBQ grill?

If he spends all that money on food, he could save it and by things in a department store instead of a Charity Shop.

Dont pay for the car insurance. Let it laps because of his spending habits.

Sounds like you are in the middle of some MAJOR financial mismangement there. You both need to stick to the rules -- and you need to set him straight on that immediately.

My husband & I have a similar situation, except ALL insurances as well as a certain amount of savings is included in the 50/50 deal. He writes me a check for 1/2 of the expenses each month, I deposit it and add my share to it, and I pay all the bills from it. Whatever is left over from each of our paychecks is OURS to spend as we see fit. But that money for the bills ALWAYS comes first and is NOT touched for anything else.

Tell him to get on the ball and do his other spending AFTER the bills are all paid up-to-date!!

Don't pay his insurance. Simply refuse, citing the reasons you have given us here. What is the guy, some kind of nut?

Its just a shame that he has to hide things from you . You must have the guy shaking in his boots and not much communication out of fear from you . You are a slave master .

Don't have any joint accounts or credit cards. Refuse to pay his bills. It will become nasty and then you will see the true color of his character.
