Not sure what you mean when you say "open pics... then I hit the download button". Wouldn't you download first, and then open the pics? Maybe you mean you open an email message and then click to download. That must be it.

Does it say it cannot create file? Is that the message, word-for-word? Be sure to wrote down the exact message becaus it may give a clue as to what's up. I download files quite often on my Mac and it works fine so I think there is something unusual going on for you. How long have you had this Mac? Has it always had this problem? If the problem is new, how many different attachments have given you this message? If it is one attachment and others work fine, your friend is just sending you some funky formatted file. Even if it has the normal ".jpg" ending of the file name, it could still be a funky format. Get someone else to send you a picture and see if it will download correctly. Or go to any web site that has pictures (don't they all nowadays it seems?) and control-click on a picture, choose to save it. Does it download fine? If not, you may have some corruption of the system. Boot to the install CD for your Mac, under the "Installer" menu (might be the "Utilities" menu) open Didk Utility. Don't repair disk permissions, just repair the disk. If it says anything beside "Appears to be OK", you have found the problem. Click to repair a second time. Does it say "Appears to be OK"? If yes, it is probably fixed. If no, Uh-oh. You may be able to fix the problem with a more powerful and expensive disk repair utility or you may need to backup your important files on an external drive or burn to a disk and erase that hard drive.

If all pictures fail to download and the Disk Utility finds nothing wrong, try creating a new admin user and loginto that other user. Now try to download a picture. If that solves the problem, you've got something funky about your old user account. It may have some corrupt Library files. Start by renaming the Preferences folder for the user or move it to the desktop and restart.
