The BIG eruption was on May 18, 1980, and the mountain stayed active for quite a few years after that. After a few years of relative quiet, activity on the mountain picked up in the fall of 2004. It then began a dome-building (and mostly non-violent) eruption which lasted until 2008.

See National Geographic articles in the issues
for January and December 1981. There is no
way, at least at present, to prevent a volcano
from erupting. The forces involved are too
great for human control. The best that can be done is to monitor the volcano to determine
when it is likely to erupt (There are ways to do
this.) and to warn people when an eruption is
likely to occur.

there is nothing humans can do about volcanic activity except devise new and better ways to predict when a volcano is nearing its eruption phase...and that technology has improved by leaps and bounds since 1980...isn't science awesome!
