my sound no longer works after installing win xp sp2. its an mpu 401 compatable driver?

mother board is Asus A7v8X
chipset VIA VT8378 KM 400/KN400 + VT8233CF/VT8235

Have tried downloading realtek ac97 drivers, but Windows say it is not compatable and crashes my pc.

i have realtek97 running on xp sp2, thats not the problem.
have you tried uninstall then reinstall the sound card?

or you could try asio drivers

From what I can see, you're installing the wrong drivers for your motherboard. According to ASUS the audio chip for the A7V8X is Avance ALC650.
