I prefer Tide. And a little girl at a local grade school tested detergents as her science project. Tide outcleaned them all! I read that and case was closed for me.

Personal choice. Some add whiteners which are little reflectors so the cloths appear brighter/whiter, some add fragrance, softeners, etc. The basic cleaner is chemically the same or very similar.
Actually it's better to trade off every so often to eliminate building up another brand's "gunk" or extras. Sun laundry detergent doesn't have a lot of extras and is a good fall back for awhile then go back to your favorite.
Some people adore Gain's fragrance, I'm not one of them. I use Tide or the generic equivalent most of the time. I switch around a bit within the line.....sometimes with the color enhancer or fabric softener but often just the plain stuff.

Neither. They both reek of perfume and scientific studies are showing that "optical brighteners" bond to your skin. Do you really want more toxic chemicals in your body or your baby's body?
Try environmentally friendly products such as Planet, Ecover, or Seventh Generation. Yes, they cost more but you can use less so the price difference evens out. The amount of detergent recommended by manufacturers is often much more than needed to clean clothes, but the more you use, the more money they make.
