I guess the excitement over the Mayan calendar thing is because supposedly the last time the calendar ended was the same year that the Conquistadors began to exterminate and enslave the Mayans.
The problem with assuming that some cataclysmic event will happen again is that even if it did we might not recognize it. And maybe the Mayan calendar only applies to the the Mayans...it didn't seem to predict the end of the world at large. The Mayans didn't "know" that the Conquistadors were the beginning of the end. Only the perspective gained through the passing of time can interpret what events truly mean.

my intuition is that it is a whole lot of gooblygook.
I mean, how convinced were some people that the world would come to an end in the year 2000? Did you ever watch, say, the ministry of John Haggis, who spent many lectures explaining how there was irreproachable proof that the stars were aligning and that the world would come to an end on the stroke of midnight, January 1st, 2000. When it didn't happen, they pointed to irregularities in the calendar, and decided that it would happen either January 1, 2003 or January 1, 2004. Well, it's April 2007, and still nothing.
Ok, it's an accurate calendar, but a pretty poor method for tracking time, by virtue that it cycles down instead of moving away from a point. They probably ment it something similar to B.C. It cycles down, then starts over.
My intuition is that January 1, 2012 will be just another New Years Day. And my intuition is backed by facts.

Nothing - 2012 will be followed by 2013 and so on.
The Mayan calendar does not end in 2012 btw. It's a calendar, like ours there is no end. You simply repeat the cycle and add to it. According to the Mayan, there will be a baktun ending in 2012, a baktun is 400 years. A significant event, but not the end of the world (necessarily)
Conclusions of all calendar cycles were a big deal. They were marked by ceremonies, sacrifices, stela inscriptions, new constructions, and so on. Generally, these were to mark the conclusion of a cycle but also to convince the gods to allow the world to continue.

Were going fall like Roman because history repeats it's self. Are youth have no care for history they consider 5 years gone by old. Just think if Ford falls as an autobile part American is done hell we invented the auto, marketed and we let a foreigne power take over. If that the case why not sell our citizenship and call America land of waste.

We'll explode.
No. But it's like countdown to the 'millenium' all over again, isn't it? People thought the world would end at moment the clock struck 12, and we're still here 7 1/2 years later.

They will flood into London for the Olympics, only to find none of the infrastructure is ready as the costs are escalating daily and we poor Brits can't afford to pay them.

Nothing unusual! There have been hundreds of doomsday predictions, and they have all been wrong. Indeed, they will always be wrong, because the persons who make them are not wise enough to make such a prediction.
