Well, saying good-bye to some people is actually quite refreshing. However, with people I actually enjoy being around, saying good-bye is ironic because it is like an oxy-moron. There is nothing "good" about saying "bye" to those you care deeply about.

I know many people who don't like saying good-bye and say "so long" or "see you later" instead. They think superstitiously about saying good-bye like it means you may never see the person again. If you look at the origin of the word good-bye, though, it seems like a very nice expression to use.

"goodbye
(US also goodby)

• exclamation used to express good wishes when parting or ending a conversation.

• noun (pl. goodbyes; US also goodbys) an instance of saying ‘goodbye’; a parting.

— ORIGIN contraction of God be with you!"

Oops! I guess you thought I wasn't going to directly answer your question. Well, I'm getting to that now. To me the worst part of saying good-bye is knowing how much I will miss that person and wondering when or even IF I will ever see them again.

The only people I have a hard time saying bye to is my family that lives in the Caribbean, because I never know when I will see them again and I'm pretty close to my niece and nephew, there are way to many miles between us and it kind of makes me sad

not knowing when you will see them again.. you say good-bye, but the worst part would have to be when you wonder when the "being gone" part will end, and when you will see them again..

know what i mean?

To me, the worst part of saying goodbye is that awful minute or two just before you know you're going to have to say it. The lump in my throat burns so badly, my heart begins to ache, and I know the tears will come soon.

I have to say goodbye to five beautiful children with whom I have been blessed to work in their foster home for the last three years. We know I only have two weeks left, and all of us are struggling with our emotions. I dread my goodbye to them because I love them so much! Have a wonderful week. Annie

I try not to say good-bye, I say so long. Because good-bye is saying that you might not see them again and I don't want to think that.

Saying it. Holding back tears, yes as the first answerer said and probably never seeing the person again as the second answerer said. it's hard. and trying to smile at them before leaving. it's hard... and the long wait before you can see them once again.

Knowing that the person still exists, just no longer in your world...and as they go their own way, you know you won't see them again. You try to rationalize it and you truly believe they weren't "the one," but in your heart you always wonder all the "what ifs." It's one of the many challenges of life.

I never say it...too depressing. (like it's all ending)
I always say, "Later" because it leaves open a window of hope.

Note:
I would say good-bye to those I hope to never see again.
