Swimming the waters around Alcatrez is something only experienced, trained swimmers should attempt. The water averages 55 degrees in June and is very treacherous and can be quite rough. Stage 1 hypothermia can set in within minutes and people have died within two hours of on-set. With a 6.5mm wetsuit and proper training you should be able to complete the ~1.5 mile swim without a problem. However it is not recommended that anyone attempt this swim without proper gear and training.

Alcatraz hosts various events throughtout the year such the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, the Alcatrez Challenege Aquathlon and Swim, the Alcatrez Invitational and the Alcatraz100 “Swim of the Centurions".

My suggestion is to contact your club or local swim team and start training. Get used to colder water, always swim open water with a buddy or spotter. Invest in a good wetsuit such as a Blue Seventy or Quintana Roo made specifically for swimming and multi-sport athletes. Chose a race that looks like fun and has a good history and check out the reports from those who have raced in the past for pointers.

You can do it but you have to be prepared!

Good luck!
