In May 2004, the Supreme Court ruled that the police have the right to search your vehicle if they have probably cause and is arresting the driver.
Also, if they ask you for permission to search your vehicle and you grant them permission, they can.
But unless they're making an arrest, they do not have the right to search your vehicle. They definitely do NOT have right to go through your phone without your permission as that can only be obtained with a warrant unless the phone is in plain sight, sees an incrimating picture and the police cites a reasonable suspicion.
So the answer is no.

1) Did you give them permission to do this? If you gave them your phone and told them it was O.K. as a result of their asking, then yes.

2) If you denied them permission to conduct this search but presented reasonable suspiscion of hiding a crime or wrongfull act, the yes. As your presentation of reasonable suspiscion could present probable casue and therefore supported a warrantless search. However, it is hard to imagine how a search of your Pics could have furthered their investigation. I assume you would not likely photograph a criminal act and conceal this from the police. If you had done so, and provided suspiscion and therefore probable cause for the search and this was discovered...too bad for you I am afraid.
