There may be mass dependency at work here. If the tendency of toast to land butter-side up is approximately equal to the tendency of the cat to land feet-down, then the greater mass of the cat would result in a greater tunring moment favouring it. Thus, the cat wins. what you need is a hollow sphere, made of toast, and buttered on the inside. This will hover an infinitesimal distance above ground, spinning frantically about no particular axis.
