Although some herbicides (weedkillers) are selective, many will kill anything they come in contact with. You have to be fussy about applying them so that they don't get on (or sometimes even NEAR) the flowering plants that you want to keep. Many weeds are easy to pull by hand. Even if there are a lot of them, they just come right up and may take you less time than going to the store, getting the weedkiller, applying it, cleaning up, etc. One tip if you do pull by hand is that weeds come up much easier when the ground is wet. Either do it right after a rain or water the garden first. I like hand pulling because you get right down there and can see what's going on with the soil, plants, insects, etc. Plus no nasty chemicals to wreck your soil.

It depends, some weedkillers are designed to kill all vegetation they contact. Others are designed to kill specific plant types - broadleaf weeds or grass type weeds. However these will also kill flowers of that type. The best thing to do is go to a garden center and ask for help for your particular situation.
