I think the phrase crop circles is kind of generic. I've seen pictures of some that were non-circular in shape and really detailed.

It is the outline of the spacecraft, and a square spacecraft would not offer fuel efficiency-too much drag. Not likely to see crop squares.

Excellent question. It is because in Alien language a square symbol is very offensive. It is the same as giving someone the middle finger.
