...how does 2x - 5 + 3x - 1 = 3 + 4 simply to 5x - 6 = 3x + 4? I'm having some trouble in my algebra. I re-studied it and have some of the rules memorized to help, but I'm just not a math whiz teen.

I know the end result, after 5x - 6 = 3x + 4, simplifies down when you add 6 to both sides, leaving a 5x = 3x + 10, and then you subtract 3x leaving 2x = 10, which finally you discover the variable by dividing 2 into 2x and 10. The end result for the variable will be x = 5. But how in the world did they get 5x = 6 from 2x - 5 + 3x - 1? You add first, right? Or did I get that confused? The only way I see to get it is to add 3x, 2x, and 1 to get the six, then put the five ahead of it. But that isn't right.

All in all, could someone explain this? Thanks a lot!!

Whoops! Yeah, I forgot the x in 3x + 4. Sorry. But everything else is right. And some answers here only make me more confused...maybe you could use less algebraic expressional language, please?

2x - 5 + 3x - 1 = 3 + 4

Collect like terms 2x + 3x = 5x and - 5 - 1 = - 6 for the left side of the equation. The right side is 3 + 4 = 7

5x - 6 = 7

Transpose + 6 to both sides of the equation

5x - 6 + 6 = 7 + 6

on the left side of the equation a - 6 and + 6 cancell. on the right side of the equation you add 7 + 6

5x = 13

Divide 5 from both sides of the equation

5x / 5 = 13 / 5

x = 13 / 5

x = 2 3/5

they would not simplify to the same thing.

you can calculate everything out, or simply observe that:

2x - 5 + 3x - 1 = 3 + 4
5x - 6 = 3 + 4
-----------------------------------
5x - 6 = 3x + 4

so by observation you can tell that, if they simplify to the same thing, x would be equals 1.

however, if you sub x=1 into any of the equation, you would end up with 5-6=7, which is wrong.

therefore, you can conclude that they do not simplify to the same thing.

if you do calculation, 2x - 5 + 3x - 1 = 3 + 4 would give you x= 13/5, whereas 5x - 6 = 3x + 4 would give you x=5.

I suppose you have forgotten x in the right side of your equation

so , you do the following in the left side you simplify, adding the terms in x and summing the numbers

you find 5x-6 . in the left side it is done so

5x-6 = 3x+4
after this put the terms in x to the left

and 5x-3x = 4+6

2x =10 x=5

it is correct 3x + 4 ,= 19 ans so on the left side
