I read Eddie joined the Marines and was a 2nd Lieutenant serving 5 weeks a year and doing a tour in Belize. At the time (1983), the story was he dropped out in basic training to work in the theatre. What is the truth?

He certainly didn't last four years - it was a matter of weeks. The Marines is the hardest of the services and he might have done better in the Navy. As a commentator said after the Queen Mother's funeral, never did a morning suit look so much like a badge of shame (when his brothers and father were in uniform). He did get a job at Andrew Lloyd Webber's Palace Theatre in Cambridge Circus, London.
