I am 24 years old and am in great need of advice. Lately, I've had a few people ask me if I'm dyslexic. I have no problem spelling or writing correctly, but I have difficulty speaking. Unlike most people, I cannot rattle things off the top of my head. If I do, it comes out all jumbled up and backwards. For instance, yesterday, I said " It's been like that all dad, day" instead of " It's been like that all day, dad". I do that ALL the time. I had speech therapy in grade school because I had trouble pronoucing the "R" sound. Also, my memory is awful. I work as a secretary and I recently found out that I will be instructing monthly meetings in front of everyone and I am horrified! I cannot get in front of 20-30 people and make a speech with out embarassing myself. If it comes down to it, I'd rather walk out than go through such torture. I just need ideas on what could be wrong with me. Is there a chance I do have dyslexia or is this some other form of disability?

sorry to all or the other respondents and to you yourself ....but what you have described does not really fit into the definition of a dyslexic learning disability...it fits more into a speech problem wether it has to do with actual speech problems or a matter of a fear of social issues.....but my advice would be to try having yourself tested for both issues that way you can help yourself overcome as much as possible to help you achieve your personal goals in your work....

try some of the suggested sites for more information and then if you find that you do have one of the suggested disabilities you will have a heads up in helping yourself to overcome as much as possible....

also if you had a learning disability in the dsylexic area (and there are over 40 in just this one area) there are some other specific difficulties that you would have been experiencing much earlier in your life as the average age for diagnosis is somewhere between 10-18yrs old.speech and languages can appear or reappear any time throughout your life

That doesn't sound like dislexia. From what you explained it seems more like a speech problem. I have to practice my r's and I never been diagnosed. Your boss asked you to instruct is because he/she feels confident that you can do it. If you have to do a presentation consider preparing a speech and practicing in front of a mirror, and relatives. I would suggest not to be so hard on yourself. I went throw the same feelings when I took a speech and drama class where I had to make a 1-5 mins. presentation for every class. It gets better, take your time when you are talking to a group. During the speech have an outline in front of you and have your materials ready way ahead of time. Don't be so hard on yourself, this could be an opportunity for steping up! You need to plan, write, revise, and practice. When you talk to the group don't look at people directly instead move your eyes around the room without looking straight at anybody. When practicing at home, ask your viewers to ask you questions. Take your time answering questions. If you plan it well you will do great!

Sounds like your psyching yourself out. Now comes tuff part that takes pratice. You need to learn how to relax and still think one unit of speech ahead of saying it. One sentence at a time till it becomes second nature. There is term for speech LD which isn't dyslexia, and If you had that your problem would be much worse than occasional tongue tie. If you were asked to instruct then someone thinks you know what your doing. Any sections you find extremely hard p p p purnounching tape the night before and just play the tape. There are thousands of techniques to aid anyone in public speaking. See what your public library has before tossing your career.

well it sounds like you are more nervous, kinda shy person. That happens when I speak to some people, i cant speak, i think sometimes i sound stupid. lol my bestfriend is so funny cuz she always fills in the blank if i cant remember what im tryng 2 say. My suggestions 2 you would be write some good notes. If it would help put 2gether a powerpoint then everybody wont be focusing on you. They will have a materials in front of them 2 look at.

I believe dyslexia is reading back words not speaking backwards i think you need to slow down think of what your going to say and then say it cause it happens to all of us at one point if you fear to talk in front of ppl then tell your supervisor and that wont work just make a joke about it and say "look i say things backward all the time so if you don't understand something please ask i think im dyslexic" and everybody will understand cause nobody want to fire the girl/or guy with the disability if you have any at that but i don't think you do anyway.

There is an amazing book called "Overcoming Dyslexia". Its a thick book but it can answer all of your questions about it. Also you can check with your school about being tested for a disability. Many students are tested daily.

sound like you have a lot in common with a lot of Americans
maybe you can't speak in front of a group, words come out wrong, memory is not good, But may you are a very good writer, good ideas ,use what you have and the other thing may or may not come, everybody can"t do everything, don't look for imperfection in your self, you are not dyslexia, it take all types of people to make the world, instead of looking for problems use the skills you have and blossom

Sounds like it could be a learning disability, such as auditory processing disorder. This is a site specifically for adults:
