A miter saw is one used for cutting simple angles or three-dimensional angles on a piece of molding. It can be either hand operated or a power saw mounted on a small table or stand.

The angled cut that is used to fit together two pieces of molding is called a miter cut. If the molding is going on a picture frame it is always a 45 degree angle. If it is going on two walls (which often don't meet at exactly 90 degrees) the two cut edges are not exactly 45 degrees - they are whatever is needed to fit neatly.

Crown molding is used at ceilings and is tipped at an angle to look good. When you take something tipped and want to join it at an angle to a matching piece that is a tougher task to miter. You need to visualize the joint in 3-D and then make a compound cut so that the tipped pieces will match properly at the corners of two walls. Now if those walls don't meet at a right angle you are talking real skill to get the cuts correct.

A miter is an angle cut to change the direction of the material you are installing. A miter saw cuts various angles to achieve this. Crown molding is a material to produce an angle from the ceiling to the wall and is usually about 45 degrees. Crown molding is normally cut with a miter saw to a corresponding angle when making joints or changing direction such as at a corner and form an almost invisible joint.

I am not sure you phrase the question correctly and you may want to redo it. A miter is a saw and yes, it is used for cutting crown molding.

right answers so far. A Miter is the angle, most often at 90 degrees, cut by using a miter box or miter chop saw. For crown Mld. the miter has to be compound.

Hi
A joint formed by beveling the edges or ends of two pieces at 45-degree angles, then fitting them together to make a 90-degree angle.

you used a miter saw for that
